Today is an important day in the RG Kar rape-murder case of Kolkata. The verdict in this case can be announced today. The CBI has sought death penalty for the accused in this case.
Kolkata: The verdict in Kolkata’s famous RG Kar rape-murder case may come today. On August 9, 2024, the body of a 31-year-old female trainee doctor was found in the conference room of the hospital. In this case, it was revealed that the doctor was first raped and then murdered. Doctors had protested against this incident for a long time and health services in the state came to a standstill.
The hearing of this case started in a closed room on November 12 and a total of 50 witnesses were questioned. The hearing of this case was completed on January 9.
Who is the main accused?
The main accused in this case is Sanjay Roy. The police arrested Sanjay Roy on August 10, immediately after the incident on August 9. The police arrested Sanjay Roy due to a Bluetooth earphone found near the victim’s body as Sanjay Roy was seen entering the seminar hall with a device around his neck in the CCTV camera footage.
The Calcutta High Court later transferred the case to the CBI. The High Court also made strong remarks against the police and the state government.
CBI has demanded death penalty
CBI has demanded death penalty for the main accused. The CBI had also arrested RG Kar’s former principal Sandip Ghosh and Tala police station officer Abhijit Mandal for alleged attempts to destroy evidence in the case. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is also investigating the financial irregularities during Ghosh’s tenure on the basis of a case registered by the CBI. However, Ghosh and Mandal were later released on bail.
