The online community is outraged by a clip recording the incident of a young man burning his biological mother (a lottery ticket seller) and preventing others from rescuing her. Over the past two days, a 27-second clip has been circulating on social media recording a young man holding a plastic bottle, pouring liquid on a female lottery ticket seller, and then lighting a fire, causing the fire to engulf the victim’s entire body. The victim shouted: “It’s on fire, it’s on fire. Oh my god, I’m on fire!”. Immediately, two people brought fire extinguishers to put out the fire on the woman’s body, but were stopped by the young man.
The incident is said to have occurred in Tra Vinh. The online community was outraged by the young man’s actions and worried about the woman’s health.
On February 25, information from the Criminal Police Department of Tra Vinh Provincial Police said that the unit was verifying the incident for handling.
According to initial information, on the afternoon of February 24, Ms. N.N.P.L (42 years old; residing in Ward 7, Tra Vinh City, selling lottery tickets) was doused with a 1.5-liter bottle of gasoline by her biological son, Duong Quoc Trung (21 years old), and then set on fire with a lighter. Trung also used bricks and nunchaku to hit Ms. L. on the head.
When the incident occurred, many people near the scene used fire extinguishers to put out the fire and restrained and arrested Trung. Ms. L. suffered severe burns and was taken to Tra Vinh Provincial General Hospital for emergency treatment, then transferred to Cho Ray Hospital (HCMC) for treatment.
Trung used to work in another province and returned home around January 2025. Recently, Trung has shown signs of severe depression and often quarrels with his mother. This young man is currently being detained by the police for investigation.
