Houston, Texas — On Saturday, November 11, 2023, Westside Patrol Division officers identified a stolen vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. The 19-year-old suspect then fled from officers at a high rate of speed until he struck multiple vehicles, rendering the stolen vehicle inoperable in the main lanes at 5201 Southwest Freeway (South Interstate U.S. Highway 59).
According to a report from the Westside Patrol, officers spotted a stolen vehicle and attempted to stop it for inspection. However, the suspect, a 19-year-old male, did not comply and instead sped away. Police immediately initiated a high-speed pursuit of the suspect.
After a long distance of driving, the suspect lost control and crashed into several other vehicles on the highway. The impact caused the stolen vehicle to stop, forcing the suspect to stop in the middle of the main lanes.
Immediately after the vehicle stopped, Officer Gibson, one of the pursuers, approached the scene and verbally ordered the suspect to exit the vehicle. However, instead of surrendering, the suspect suddenly pulled out a gun and fired at the officer.
Officer Gibson was shot while on duty. Fortunately, a citizen present at the scene and another officer quickly assisted and pulled him to a safe position to avoid the suspect’s gunfire.
After the shooting, other police forces immediately cordoned off the area and took measures to control the suspect. There are currently no details about the suspect’s condition after the confrontation.
